child When my family moved to Spokane a couple months ago, a local mom told me that I really should take my kids to Walter's Fruit Ranch. I'm so glad I took her advice! When I entered the gift shop to find out where the strawberries were growing, the kind man working there could see I had my hands full with my 2 year old and 4 year old. He told me to go ahead and drive right through the fields to the strawberry patch. To folks used to living in a big city where people are rude and everything is surrounded by cement, this was quite an unusual experience for us. We drove down the dirt lane with pumpkins springing up on one side and strawberries on the other, loving every minute! At one point during our picking adventure I looked up and realized that we were the only people as far as the eye could see. Just me, my 2 kids, and a warm, gentle breeze, surrounded by delicious berries... it was a taste of heaven. We've been to Walter's more than 5 times since moving here and the kids just love petting the goats, playing in the peas, being pulled around the orchard by the tractor (oh yeah, they'll ride you around even if you're not picking!), and eating ice cream in the gift shop. Thanks for such a warm welcome to the gorgeous state of Washington! We're looking forward to the Apple Festival!
img2 My husband and I come to Walters every year for pumpkin picking and he always gives me a rule: I can only get as many pumpkins as I can carry! Otherwise we'd have an entire house full of pumpkins. Last year I was 7 months pregnant when we went for pumpkins and that unfortunately meant there wasn't as much room to carry them. John still insisted I could only get as many as I could carry until I finally told him I'd start putting pumpkins in my overalls if he didn't get me a cart! He agreed (laughing all the way) and I got the pumpkins I wanted. We packed them in the car and headed to the cafe for the best pie we've ever had (which is why we get them several times a year!). Walters is definitely an annual tradition for us -- one we plan on sharing with our new daughter Katie this year!

Thank you to the Redmans for their adorable pictures from the ranch. We hope you had a wonderful day.

Last August, I went to Otis, Maine for my sisters 50th wedding anniversary. After being there for 4 days, she became very sick with a viral flu. After 4 days flat in bed, I asked her what she would like the most. Being originally from Spokane as we both are, she said jokingly, “A fresh peach from Green Bluff.”

I called Walters' Fruit Ranch and asked them what it would take, to send some peaches. They said “We can send you an 18 pack of fresh peaches off the tree, no problem." in two days they expressed them 3150 miles to me, unknown to my sister. I ordered them, hoping they would survive and they were delivered in 'perfect' condition. I took the full box into my sisters bedroom and said, “Hear you are, your Green Bluff peaches.” She could not believe I did this, she ate all 18 peaches in one week.

I might add, peaches back in Maine are hard as a rock and sell in stores for about $3.55 a pound. As I returned to Spokane, I went to Walters' and personally thanked them.

Dear Walter's,

In 1995 my now husband and I were students at the University of Idaho. One weekend we were looking for something fun to do and since we got the Spokesman Review in Moscow, we saw a small article about Apple Fest and decided to try it out. That was our first trip to Green Bluff and Walter's was the first farm we stopped at.

We have managed to make it every year since then. We now enjoy bringing our boys to pick apples and pumpkins, ride ponies, and just enjoy being outdoors. We've even made it a couple of times for the Strawberry Festival. Walter's is always our first and longest stop. We hope to continue this short yearly trip that has become such a part of our lives.

See you this weekend!

My husband and my two boys have gone to Harvest Festival every year for the past five years. Our kids have grown up riding the Fruit Loop Express, playing in corn kernels and dried peas, walking through the corn maze and picking the best apples right from the tree. We have taken tons of pictures in the orchard and pumpkin patch over the years. It has become a family tradition to go to Walter's and we look forward to it every September/October. We're headed out there this weekend to pick apples, have some kettle corn and indulge in some homemade ice cream and fresh pie. YUM!
